Academic Biography

I’m Madelyn Newton, a 2018 graduate from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Fashion Merchandising and Certificate in Sustainability.

During my time in college, I’ve held a myriad of positions from being hired on as a resident advisor as a freshman to working at a sustainable clothing boutique in downtown Athens and interning as a journalism intern in London to conducting a full research study concerning sustainable consumption in the fashion industry. All the while, I’ve gotten to volunteer for local and student-run organizations who make  sustainability outreach personal. I’ve loved getting to work alongside so many inspirational people as we all strive for a greener future.

  • Communications Assistant, Community (2016-2017)
    • Contributed sustainability knowledge; built positive relationships with customers; managed vendor relations and communication; handled inventory of locally made products, vintage and redesigned garments; created content for social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook; generated ideas for sales, promotions, brand-awareness programs and events; contributed visual merchandising talents
  • Intern, Business Green (2018)
    • Published articles about current events surrounding sustainable initiatives, inventions and infrastructure in the United Kingdom and beyond
  • Intern, Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel (2018)
    • Collaborated with a team of five women as the Georgia Center’s debut sustainability interns;Enhanced their Sustainability Strategic Plan through a comprehensive written proposal and verbal presentation; Objectives included increasing eco-initiatives through the incorporation ofzero-waste events and a green savings plan; Conducted waste audits; Displayed effectivemulti-division communication, project management, and creative problem-solving
  • Research Assistant, Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (2018)
    • Conducting a full, faculty-guided study fall of 2018 researching how dimensions of empathy affect sustainable consumption, specifically clothing, with IRB (Institutional Review Board) approval; research requires student engagement; utilizing Qualtrics software

  • Apparel Quality and Analysis
    • Constructed an educational website from the ground-up about the negative effects of fast fashion. Coined ‘Trashcan Trends‘ due to the large amount of textile waste facilitated by the rapid acceleration of the fashion cycle
  • Emory Case Study Competition
    • Competed on a team of six UGA students to present an original strategic plan to aid Atlanta in implementing the United Nation’s Sustainable Development goals, specifically SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, on a local scale
